MUNKEY JUICE'S SASSY POTATO CD review by vinnie baggadonuts- Taste Like Chicken 9/2003 ----- Were I a trained professional, and not a Class AA drunk, I'd say this: Ohio-based band Munkey Juice's latest disc, Sassy Potato, is an ethereal, indie-rock throwback to the days of Mudhoney, Minutemen, and The Pixies, but without stealing those bands' sounds. In vibe and spirit, Munkey Juice goes their own way, painting sonic pictures of chaos, confusion, and a hella good time. Check it out for yourself at munkeyjuice.net. But, since most professional music reviewers are just nerds with huge music collections, compensating for an inability to play anything other than a mean game of Risk, and I'm not one of these, I'd rather write this: Imagine watching some happy-go-lucky, Capra-esque ass-film like Singin' in the Rain, and having Gene Kelly get mauled by a pack of manic-depressive banshees in the middle of his world-famous song and dance number. That'd be pretty fucking hilarious if you ask me. It'd also be the perfect time to ditch that prison bitch Broadway showtune music, and toss Munkey Juice's Sassy Potato into the stereo. Not that Munkey Juice are even bloody and aggressive. But to have a shiny, happy musical interrupted by murderous, bi-polar banshees is a pretty bizarre scenario. And the music that Munkey Juice makes is nothing but appropriate. They don't necessarily sound like anyone else, but something about them makes me think of Minutemen or The Pixies. Maybe it's because I always thought of those two bands in the same way, too. (Just imagine little Kimmy Deal kicking the shit out of young Judy Garland, with all those fucking winged monkeys flying around!) For real, dawg, I like this record because I: A) Don't own anything like it. B) Can't really describe it with typical comparisons. My ears are pleased. Poor Gene Kelly. Sassy Potato is Munkey Juice's 5th album and Sassy is a lot more aggressive then MJ's previous albums. The album features the tune '(Like A) Rolling Munkey', which features lyrics spliced together using Rolling Stones songs. Formed by the Heise brothers in 1995, Munkey Juice is a rock band for the hard of hearing. God himself once said this of the Juice, 'Rock never tasted so good'. Munkey Juice has been through their fair share of drummers in the spirit of Spinal Tap. They have released eight full length albums, and four EP's. This is their double album Moscow which features the talents of Minneapolis rock band Roscoe. Nelson Heise takes care of most the singing, strumming, and the dictating in the band. Robert 'Bubba' Heise does the slappin', tappin', and occasionally rappin'. Most importantly, Bubba is the looks and PR guy.
